GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Matthew Tavares (aka Matty) shares "Boyfriend," another cut from his forthcoming album POPS out August 16 via Lex Records. Listen to "Boyfriend" here.
A soaring track that holds a back-to-basics trademark chord progression with the shade of 80s guitars, "Boyfriend" crosses new wave with post-Britpop melodies. The track burns with the crave of desire, lackadaisical versus of reprieve skiffle into twitching guitar lines in the vein of Bloc Party or The Bravery. Here, Matty pines for connection.
Alongside a brand new video directed by Connor Olthuis, Matty says, "'Boyfriend' is the first song I wrote for my upcoming album POPS. I wrote and recorded it with my friend Kaan Güneşberk over a manic two hours, and honestly there’s nothing else to say other than we wanted to make a fun, entertaining song."

Throughout POPS, Matty pulls on the strings of heartache complexities and life-affirming love in a stripped back nature. Relinquishing his low key and understated style for something larger than life, Matty’s sound fuses his nostalgia for the golden era of blogs with the diversification of the late 2000s and an isolated suburban upbringing.
As the next taste of new music from Matty, "Boyfriend" joins previous singles "MADLY" / "AROUND THE WORLD" and "FOOL 4 U." While they're glimpses of what's to come in POPS, the album is an open and honest 11-track record that constellates around music’s greatest subject: love. Acclaim for Matty's forthcoming LP has already spread far and wide, from Brooklyn Vegan, Exclaim, Pitchfork, NOTION, Pilerats and more, as well as radio support from Double J, triple j, KCRW and FBi Radio amongst others, praising Matty’s ability to make music that “comes straight from the heart” (Clash Magazine).
A founding member and keyboardist of acclaimed jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD, Tavares has gone from being an in-demand producer with some of the biggest names in music to a songwriter and artist in his own right, having touched corners of the globe and cemented two GRAMMY Awards and five nominations. Between collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM, Tyler the Creator, Kali Uchis, Tavares has also played with Frank Ocean, soundtracked Virgil Alboh’s landmark S/S 2019 runway show for Louis Vuitton, and penned songs for Post Malone, Rosalia, Travis Scott, Kodak Black, Justin Beiber, Camilla Cabello, Jack Harlow amongst others.
