Today - 30th May @ 7pm - Introspective singer/songwriter Gabzy releases the video for his new single, "X." The cinematic video, directed by Nathan Burland (known for his work with Headie One and Cruel Santino), captures Gabzy in various settings, navigating the complexities of his relationship with his love interest. Throughout this emotive track, Gabzy reflects on the past, subtly reminding his former partner of the privilege she once had by being with him. As the story unfolds, Gabzy shifts the narrative, positioning himself as the star of the show and suggesting that being with him is the ultimate prize. The alluring production courtesy of Nigerian Grammy award winner Dera (Kelani/Major Lazor/Ayra Starr) creates the perfect backdrop for Gabzy to assert, "If I was your X, it would be a Flex." Following on from the release of "Piano,", "X" is Gabzy's second single of the year, offering a captivating glimpse into his world of self-assured charm and playful swagger.
Hailing from Peckham, South East London, the 28-year-old vocalist was nurtured in a Nigerian household and experienced the vibrant tapestry of New York for two transformative years. Gabzy's rich cultural immersion has seamlessly woven a fusion of Alte, R&B, and Afro influences, propelling him swiftly into the multifaceted artist he is today. Gabzy's musical journey started at 9, harmonising in the school choir, and his exploration of diverse styles and sounds continued into his teenage years. While at university, Gabzy was signed to a US record label and relocated to New York, with ambition and dreams of stardom, brushing shoulders with artists and music executives. The move did not mirror his aspirations, and following two years of frustration, he contemplated ending his music journey altogether. The turning point came with his collaborative EP, 'Summers,' alongside Nigerian artist Melvitto, whom he had met and collaborated with in New York. The ‘Summers’ project thrust him into the spotlight and cultivated a dedicated fan base (2.7 Million monthly listeners), in the UK and beyond. Gabzy then unveiled his debut solo EP, 'Malone,' a stellar release that paved the way for a triumphant headline show at North London's prestigious Islington Assembly Hall, which sold out in seconds.
Throughout his career, Gabzy has carved a niche as the king of melodies, solidifying his status as a hitmaker through notable collaborations with Darkoo, Blanco, Abra Cadabra, King Promise and Odeal. Gabzy's remarkable career boasts co signs from reputable platforms such as Complex, Notion, Wonderland, Guap magazine and securing one of the few spots on BBC Radio 1xtra Hot for 2022 List. His last solo EP, 'At The End of the Night', was followed by a UK tour culminating in two consecutive sold-out nights at the iconic KOKO in London. Undeterred by a busy studio schedule last year, he released two solo singles, ‘Hear Me Out’ and ‘Jambazz’, the latter has accumulated over 8 million streams and peaked at 18 in the official UK Afrobeats radio charts. Renowned for his live performances, Gabzy orchestrated another sold-out spectacle for his fans at the esteemed Somerset House, followed by a sold-out East African tour.
Gabzy is swiftly emerging as one of the UK’s most exciting musical talents, and his unique sound, melodies, and powerful vocals set him apart in the congested scene. His fusion of musical styles has garnered over 2.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify and attracted attention from tastemakers at BBC Radio 1, MTV Base, BBC 1Xtra, KISS FM, and Capital Xtra. Gabzy has started 2024 as he means to go on, his most recent effort ‘Piano’ alongside Lekaa Beats has over 1M Spotify streams since its release.
