Today, on July 10th, East London singer-rapper Rio Rainz marks his return with his first release of the year, "BAD!". Produced by Oscar Moos, “BAD!” is a playful, bouncy track that sees Rio expressing his feelings for a special someone who has captured his attention. The accompanying video, directed by RAD Films (Matilda Mann/Joy Crookes), captures Rio’s old soul with the clever piano lounge intro and outro. Soft summery tones flow throughout, and Rio's larger-than-life aura shines as he glides through the streets of London in a vibrant vintage car. When speaking on the single, Rio states, “‘BAD!’ has a high-energy feel that makes you want to move and feel a bit vain. It’s not just about being bad. It’s about embracing your mischievous side and breaking away from conventions and expectations. It encourages you to take risks and celebrate your individuality without worrying about judgement.” At the end of 2023, Rio released his third EP, "Cobwebs in My Room," a six-track project that showcased his unique fusion of alt-R&B and rap, solidifying his place in the burgeoning UK DIY scene. This release was followed by a standout, sold-out debut showcase at The Lower Third, further establishing his presence in the music industry.
Born to Irish and Jamaican parents in East London, Rio began honing his craft at a young age, playing keys for the church choir and attending performing arts school, where his love for all things creative flourished. Through introspective lyrics, he has openly shared his highs and adolescent battles, hoping to support others with his vulnerability. Rio has developed an uncommon perspective for someone his age, harbouring a distaste for all things modern while cherishing genuine, real-life connections. His distinctive worldview enables him to merge his diverse creative talents into his music seamlessly. His genre-fluid sound reflects a mix of all his inspirations, breaking stereotypes and creating a multi-layered musical experience.
Rio burst onto the scene at fifteen with a powerful Black Box freestyle that went viral, confirming his rapping and singing abilities to the masses. His debut EP, "Withdrawal Symptoms," and follow-up EP, "Cobwebs in My Room," have cemented his position in the thriving DIY-Alt-Rap/R&B scene. Rio's fanbase has quadrupled these past few years thanks to co-signs from The Face, NME, Hypebeast, MTV, and Complex. After climbing the UK Viral Chart on Spotify in 2023, he graced the cover of the flagship alternative playlist Our Generation twice, making him a top artist to watch for 2024.
